Psychiatry
Attracting and retaining good psychiatrists and providing the
best possible
psychiatric services has been an ongoing workforce concern in the
Behavioral Health
System (BHS). Philadelphia Connections has addressed this concern by:
1. Hosting
meetings
that included representatives of community psychiatrists,
psychiatry
residency programs, care providers, and city and state government
agencies.
2. Presenting seminars on
the Philadelphia public system structure and resources to
psychiatric residents
(more details, click here)
3. Presenting seminars on
community psychiatry as a job and career option to
psychiatric residents
4. Conducting surveys to
gather key information about psychiatric workforce issues.
Surveys have included:
a. A formal survey of all
five psychiatry residency programs in the area.
The results showed
that psychiatry residents were extensively involved with
BHS
providers
through residency rotations.

b.
A statewide survey concerning psychiatry residents' interest in community
psychiatry, influences on interest in
community psychiatry, and important issues
in post-residency employement.
